Forts and Palaces in Munger
Portrait of Munger Fort

Munger Fort is one of the prime forts of Bihar and is located on a rocky hillock at southern bank of River Ganges. It is a must visit destination while traveling to the historic city of Munger. Although exact historic information is not known but speculations are that it had been built in the period of India’s Slave dynasty while Muhammad bin Tughluq (1325-1351 AD) ruled the country. Attractions of Munger Fort include two prominent hills namely Karnachaura or Karanchaura. Muslim kings like Khaljis, Tughlaqs, Lodis, Nawabs of Bengal and Mughals subsequently controlled this fort while ruling over this region. Mir Quasim (1760–72) finally handed over the Munger Fort to British when the latter had complete command over this region. Beauty of Munger Fort lies in its preserving numerous religious and historic monuments of all periods it witnessed. Some of them include Tomb of Pir Shah Nufa (died 1497), Palace of Shah Suja, Tomb of Mulla Muhammad Said and famous Kashtaharini Ghat on Ganges River amongst others. An ancient temple Chandisthana and a British cemetery from 18th century do exist here. Very recent addition in its marvels is the establishment of a prominent Yoga School inside it.

Existing since 13th century, Munger Fort was revamped by its rulers over the centuries. Mughals kings substantially expanded as the fort with an aim to continue military fortification. Today, this fort spreads over an area of 222 acres. Its 4 feet thick inner and 12 feet thick outer walls keep the fort well maintained even today. It has four entry gates and its main gate is named Lal Darwaza. It is in good shape and remains major center of attraction for tourists throughout the year.

Jalalgarh Fort

Located in the Purnia region of Bihar, the ruins of ancient Jalalgarh Fort still reminds of the golden era of this region. The ruins were in dilapidated condition until recently. An attempt was made in the year 2012 to renovate this fort by considering the demands of masses and to increase tourism avenues in this region. Existing since last three centuries, Jalalgarh Fort is located at the outskirts of the Purnia city at a distance of 20 km in the northern side. It is in the ruined stage now but leaves ample room for historic explorers to learn about the region’s past. It is said that the then ruler, Syed Muhammed Jalaluddin Khan had built this fort. Other historians claim it was built by the ruler of Purnia Nawab Saif Khan in 1722. Exact details and authentic information is not known yet.

Unique structure of Jalalgarh Fort describes its typical architecture. It once existed as a large quadrangular structure whose high walls were deliberately erected to ensure that Nepalese invasions could be stopped and the region would remain protected from such external forces. One more important factor that brought this fort into national limelight is the architectural richness combining Hindu and Islamic architecture. In fact that quintessence of this fort increased its beauty while portraying its true message of secularism.

The state authorities took an initiative to restore Jalalgarh Fort from January 2012. Though many such steps have been taken but it is impossible to reconstruct the fort. Ruins have been secured in restoration step to preserve it and stop further damages. This fort defines much about the golden past of Purnia which historians can explore during their visits.
